The Man Who Raised And Mentored Matthew Mangano, Carmine "Short-Cake" Muscatelli

Born in Palermo, Sicily in 1926, Carmine Muscatelli was a full-blooded, die-hard Italian mafioso. Immigrating to the “land of opportunities” as a young boy, Carmine grew up in an era free of movies and fiction, glorifying the life of a mobster. But the glory of that life was still the only side he saw. Carmine's family was mafia-royalty back in Sicily, which paved the way for his future, before he was even born.

Carmine dedicated his whole life to the laws of Cosa Nostra- in his neighborhood, the rules of Cosa Nostra were the only rules to be followed. Carmine lived and breathed Cosa Nostra, after getting inducted into the Lucchese family at the age of 25, Carmine went through the ceremony of becoming a "made guy", before experiencing his own wedding. He was kid, who truly knew no other way to life, than the life of Cosa Nostra.

If John Gotti was considered a prestigious mobster, Carmine Muscatelli should have been seen as a prophet in the underworld of "La Cosa Nostra".

Carmine was groomed in an era where the mafia in Liberty City strived. The mafia had the up-most control and loyalty, comprehensively following Cosa Nostra rules. Because of this, Carmine was able to pass on the knowledge and street smarts, which he was fortunate enough to have been taught. Over the years, Carmine had many proteges, one of which was Matthew Mangano, a tall, bushy-eyebrowed young man, who roamed the streets of Hove Beach, Broker, as a free-agent. When Carmine started to groom Matthew, he noticed Matthew's mind was elsewhere: Matthew was roaming with a crew of young, lazy and degenerate thugs, who spent most hours of their day hanging out at Al's Pizzeria. Carmine responded to this by officially putting Matthew on record with him, and transferring him to the crew Carmine was a soldier in, the Saratoga Avenue crew.

The first years were like Kindergarten- Matthew was being taught the basics of life, how to act, how not to act etc. Carmine spent about four years shaping Matthew into a tough loyalist, who wouldn't hesitate to break someone's legs, if only Carmine gave him the order. Only then did Matthew start kicking up money to Carmine.

In the summer of 1993, the current captain of the Saratoga Avenue crew was indicted on murder- and racketeering charges. As a result of this, Carmine was finally bumped up to captain.

Two years after Carmine became a captain, he proposed Matthew Mangano for membership. On December 10th, 1995, Matthew Mangano was inducted into the Lucchese family.

Carmine stayed active, still living by the rules of Cosa Nostra. Carmine had always lived a somewhat healthy life, staying away from cigarettes and sometimes alcohol. Carmine lived to see 86, until he finally passed away in his sleep.

In 2022, a voice recording of Matthew Mangano surfaced, where he said following: "If Carm' could see how our friends act these days, he'd be turning in his grave".
