Our independent investigations of deaths and the analysis of evidence provides answers to families and communities during the most challenging of times. With multiple offices throughout all of Liberty City, OCME is the largest medical examiner's office in the country. Our experts investigate multiple deaths per day within Liberty City and tests hundreds of individual pieces of evidence in our laboratories. The results of our work inform legal proceedings, shape public health policy, and help families settle their affairs. The Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) is responsible for investigating all deaths of persons in Liberty City occurring from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, suddenly when in apparent health, when unattended by a physician, in a correctional facility, or in any unusual or suspicious manner. OCME also reviews all cremation permits of any person who dies in Liberty City. OCME serves as the mortuary for the City, with a legal mandate to take custody of all unidentified and unclaimed remains within Liberty City.
