  2. Was an admin for a few years on a very popular RP server. Could write an essay on this subject honestly. But rather than just stating what makes a bad admin, here's some of the simplest pieces of advice I can give to people in staff roles; Remember why you (probably) became an admin. At the end of the day, we're all players here trying to engage in this form of entertainment we enjoy. Your volunteer position is greatly appreciated, but it doesn't make you more than your fellow community members. Your role is about supporting the community, not controlling it. Players first mentality. Similarly, non-staff players need to remember that the people working in staff roles are doing so voluntarily and are unpaid. They're doing this (probably) out of pure passion and it's a lot of work. Respect goes a long way with a staff member, because we do really appreciate it. I always had a simple rule. If you treated me with respect, I'll do the same. If you don't, I will treat you like shit. Don't be afraid to not know everything. Too often admins become complacent or believe that they know everything about a subject. There's nothing wrong in asking people, particularly non-staff, for information. For instance; many don't have the in-depth knowledge of Motorcycle Clubs and how they work in the real world. But there are people who do have the knowledge and experience and would gladly share. It doesn't make you any less of an asset to the community to ask for help.
  3. Welcome to how Americans have felt for years though. By the time a normal American gets out of work or school its 8 or 9 PM in the European timezones. It goes both ways because activities that would happen in daylight or businesses that would close for the night are frequently done in the night time because of American timezones. Nor can you simply make an argument that nightclubs and night life is more important than any of the daytime-based activities. Surely we want players to have as many opportunities as possible. We can also kill the rhetoric that crime only happens at night. These days it's simply not true and it's just part of how we deal with regions in roleplay. And the funny part is @sk8 is rolling on the floor laughing because his timezone is even more fucked than EU or NA for stuff like this. The reality is is that with a diverse playerbase as we'll have — there will always be regions that don't have the luxury of normal playtimes that hit both daylight and nighttime. But as we will probably be primarily a playerbase of EU's and NA's, I think finding a middle ground that supports both, albeit if not perfectly, rather than just EU would be the better move. GMT -2 or so. Just have to have suspension of disbelief to recognize that sometimes a club will open in the daylight or a daylight activity might have to happen at night. A crime will occur at any time. This is what Americans have dealt with for years. Best we can do.
  4. I think it should be something around GMT -2 maybe. That way it's a middle ground for playerbases, but it's still closer to the actual timezone of NY. If for nothing else as well, every major roleplay server has catered to european timezones for the last like 10 years. Would be nice to have a timezone that supports us Americans a little more.
  5. I don't really know how feasible it would be to limit NPC drivers to just the freeways. I know there's pathing so theoretically you could. But I don't think it'd be worth it just for a little more immersion. I mean at the end of the day, so what if the highways seem populated — the rest of the map is just going to seem deserted, more so in comparison with active highways. All that scripting NPC drivers will do is have players treat the roads like AI-on tracks in Need for Speed. Dodging in and out of traffic to avoid the AI so they can continue to barrel at a buck 20 to whatever destination they're heading. And when they inevitably do hit an AI driver, they will skip any roleplaying of it. And I don't blame them because it's not like you could take the situation any further with an NPC that'll despawn 20 feet down the road. No hit-and-run investigations to be had. I think it's better if all the entities were based on real people, as much as possible, and just accept that unlike the real world our game world will seem.. empty.
  6. Ultimately, as much as we want to incorporate realism into the server it is a game and people are playing characters and having goals of achieving things. Very few people want to play someone who relies on the metro lines and public transportation to get around and even if they do — it would be unhealthy for the server to deny players easy access to befitting vehicles for their characters to shoehorn them into public transport. Think about why NYC public transport is so significant — traffic congestion. But we can't accurately replicate that in a server that at best will have a couple hundred on it at any given time compared to a city with millions. And even if we could, the performance cost it would have would be detrimental. The best thing you can do is develop public transport scripts and programs with care and effort to make them really good and strongly encourage their use — particularly via providing benefits to public transport compared to using vehicles.. but at the end of the day the player playing a motorcycle club member is going to drive a motorcycle around. The mobster is going to drive his car, and a select few are going to use public transport on their way into work at LCPD/FDLC, etc.
